Results of our On-Line Job Seeker Survey.

Visitors to the site will know that we have been running an on-line survey for the last 6 months. We are pleased to say that the results have now been extracted and tabulated. The survey will remain in place so that we can continually monitor the experiences of our job seekers. If you have not taken the survey already, please do so. It only takes a few minutes and will help us maintain the best services for our customers – you!

Rather than present a table of figures, we have created an easy to read profile of a typical job seeker’s activities and experiences. You may differ in some respects, but we are confident that you will recognize many of the common themes. We have also included some pointers along the way to guide your future job seeking activities.

The Results

Job Searching Mediums Most Commonly Used

It is not surprising that the main method that job seekers use to conduct their job searches is still Word Of Mouth. Most people get their jobs by knowing someone who knows of one. The second most popular method was local, on-line job boards, followed by School Career Centers. Understandably, Newspaper Classifieds were not mentioned by any of the recipients as a major source.

Most important Issues

The things that are most important to job seekers when looking for jobs on-line are: Quality of local jobs and Flexible Search Capabilities.

Unlike most other job boards, our marketing is aimed specifically at employers looking to fill part-time, temporary, seasonal, internship or entry-level positions, so the chances of finding a quality job on a specialized site such as ours are much increased.

Other Important Factors

Other factors that are important to businesses are: Career Building Resources, such as resume help and Local Classified Ads.

We offer many pages of Career Guidance articles covering everything from organizing your self–marketing plan, through networking, resume and cover letter writing to interviewing and negotiating techniques and tips.

The most common types of jobs searched for on The Web.

From your answers, the most common types of jobs searched for on-line are Internships, Camp Jobs, Child Care, Entertainment, Retail and Volunteer. The Retail answer surprises me as most retail and walk-in organizations rely on window signage and word of mouth to fill their vacancies.

A final word ...

You need to feel that an employer is giving your resume the attention it deserves. True?

However, many job seekers respond to anything that moves, drowning recruiters under mountains of resumes. This means that they cannot give individual resumes much attention and good people are often overlooked because of this. Don’t spoil it for the rest – only apply for a position if you can honestly say that you match at least 80% of the requirements in the job posting. Also, if an employer asks you to fill out an application form, do it carefully, remembering that the easier it is for them to evaluate your strengths and suitability, the more chance you have of winning that job.

I hope you found this Newsletter interesting and useful to your job search. Please let me know what you think by using the feedback form on the web site, or by e-mailing me.

Good Hunting!

Best Regards, Bill Christian
